FAQ – Can I do a fire risk assessment myself?
Yes and no. The law doesn’t specifically say business owners can’t complete their own assessments – but it does demand two things of every assessment which make it highly unlikely that they should.
1. A fire safety risk assessment must be completed by a ‘competent person’. This means a combination of professional training and experience of regularly carrying out assessments.
2. A fire safety risk assessment must be ‘suitable and sufficient’. That means that it must take into consideration all fire safety hazards and evaluate them against the people at risk. It must also evaluate the current control measures and new ones where appropriate against industry best practices.
