How to wash your hands properly.

The first step to protecting yourself against Coronavirus (COVID-19) and other infections.

At the time of posting (3rd March 2020), there are now 30 confirmed UK cases of COVID-19 (Coronavirus). The government yesterday set out further details of their plan to combat the spread of the virus, however, they have now conceded that a wider outbreak is likely.

In a blog last week we discussed several steps which you can take to protect yourself and slow down the spread of coronavirus. One of these steps included regularly washing your hands.

Washing your hands can act as a very effective preventative measure not only for coronavirus but for a lot of diseases, viruses and bacteria. But, have you put much thought into how you wash your hands – are you doing it correctly? It can seem like a silly thing to consider, but using poor hand washing technique means you won’t be gaining most of the benefits.

As part of our food safety management system, we endorse the 11 NHS  hand washing steps, as follows.

The NHS estimate that it should take you around 20 seconds to properly wash your hands – or the amount of time it takes you to sing ‘happy birthday’ twice.

This simple technique if followed correctly and consistently, will help make a huge impact on the prevention of illness.
